We know you have seen them. Some may even find them extremely annoying. But…
Can exit popups increase checkout conversions?
We don’t recommend going crazy with exit offers but if used strategically they can be a powerful tool to increase checkout conversions. Something to keep in mind that with exit popups, most advertising networks don’t allow them on the landing page. Thus the reason we say to use them strategically such as on your checkout page as in this specific example.
To prove just how effective exit popups can be to increase checkout conversions we decided to test it on a particular campaign.
We had tested a bunch of elements on this campaign on all pages leading to checkout pushing almost 300% more visitors through the checkout process but we needed to figure out a way to capture some of the additional people who were leaving the checkout process before making a purchase.
So what did we test to increase checkout conversions?
Recently this company raised its prices (for specific reasons) and we did discover through other tests that the visitors respond well to urgency as well as discounts.
On 50% of the traffic we tested the use of an exit popup (pictured above) that offers a special limited time only discount of 10% which they only see if they try to leave the actual checkout page before making a purchase.
Did it increase checkout conversions?
The result of the 10% discount offer showed 36.36% of people that tried to leave the checkout page made a purchase with the discount. Sales that would have been difficult to get back even with their successful retargeting campaign.
The question again? Can exit popups increase checkout conversions?
According to this test the popup offering the discount has been pretty effective in picking up some lost sales and has helped increase checkout conversions.
Some different ways you can leverage exit popups to increase checkout conversions…
- Test bigger discounts
- Test offering a bonus of some kind to increase the value
- Test a dollar amount discount versus a percentage
Be creative in how you present the offer. Remember these are people that wouldn’t have otherwise purchased. So test out different offers to save the sale.

- Give a hard deadline
- Make it a one time only offer
- Highlight the benefits again
- Show a testimonial
- Highlight the guarantee on the product.
It is working but it can always be better.
